History

George Travis began partnership with Samuel Russell in 1861. In 1863 they separated each with his own company. G.Travis & Co. was established in that year at 69 Charles St. in 1868 a move was made to Clarence Works, 13 Bath St. In 1909, the firm became Travis, Wilson & Co. (q.v.).

Travis, Wilson & Co., Ltd was the continuation of G.Travis & Co. and dates from 1909 at the Clarance Works, 13 Bath St. In 1967, a move was made to 85 Denby St. In 1926, the firm took over the trade name of MANOR PEWTER from A.Milns for their own - MANOR PERIOD PEWTER. The Travis, Wilson firm serves as a good example of one of many Sheffield firms which produced wares under trade description of Britannia Metal in the 19th Century and then produced the same wares in the 20th century under the trade description of Sheffield Pewter.

In the early years the majority of the work in the small workshop would be traditional Teapots and Plates with just a few Tankards. All work would be of heavy gauge pewter and this could contain an unacceptable degree of lead.

Travis, Wilson joined with George Lee somewhere in the early 20th Century and carried on as a small maker until both companies joined the Julius Isaacs Group of Companies in 1967. At this time the production mix had changed largely to the medium gauge Glass bottom Tankards for export to the United States, in very large quantities.

The Julius Isaacs' Group joined the Pinder Bros' Group in 1981 and Pinder Bros acquired Pilgrim Pewter in 1992. Travis, Wilson then became the Groups main manufacturer and distributor of pewterware to the wholesale trophy trade.

The majority of pewterware is sold with a neutral mark, as many trophy wholesalers do not wish the source of their production to be known to end-users. In addition many large orders are specially marked with customers' own brands.

Today, all the Pewter used is to the current British Standard and meets all the worldwide environmental standards, says the company.
